A house was burglarized and set on fire in Amherst County this week, and a $1,000 reward is being offered for information, the county sheriff’s office said Friday.

A couple returned to their home in the 900 block of Perkins Mill Road, near the Nelson County line, and found it on fire about 10 p.m. Wednesday, according to a news release.

Extensive damage was done to the home. The front door had been forced open, and a handgun and jewelry were stolen.

A flammable liquid had been poured along the rear of the residence and ignited, the sheriff’s office said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Investigator J.D. Tetterton with the Amherst County Sheriff’s Department at (434) 946-9385 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-798-5900.
