Second teenager dies after Albemarle County wreck

A second teen has died as a result of a weekend crash on U.S. 29 in southern Albemarle County.

The death of Joshua Woolmer, 13, of Edgewood, Md., raised to three the number of people killed in wrecks in the last week on a quarter-mile stretch near 29’s intersection with Plank Road, Albemarle police spokesman Todd Hopwood said.

None of the three was wearing a seatbelt, Hopwood said.

Kathryn Russell, 53, of North Garden, died at the intersection Thursday when she pulled out from Plank Road in the path of a southbound van, according to Albemarle police.

No charges are pending in the crash, authorities said.

The second wreck took place two days later. Woolmer and another 13-year-old, Destiny Greene, of Edgewood, were both thrown from the rear of a Dodge Caravan driven by Greene’s grandmother, Jo Ann Greene, 53 and also of Edgewood, during heavy rain Saturday.

Destiny Greene died at the scene. Woolmer was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center, where he died Sunday, Hopwood said.

Another passenger in the Caravan, Larry Daughtry, 42, also of Maryland, was taken to the hospital, where he was last reported in stable condition, Hopwood said.

The group was driving back to Maryland from Lynchburg.

There were wet leaves on the road, according to witnesses, and Hopwood said police do not think alcohol was a factor.

The investigation into the wreck is continuing, and authorities have not yet decided whether to file charges.
