AARP seeking 2010 volunteer tax aides
This last tax season, 40 local volunteers provided free assistance to more than 3,700 low- and moderate-income taxpayers in the preparation of their federal and state income tax returns. These volunteers operate under the auspices of the AARP Foundation with training material and computer software/equipment provided by the IRS. The service is known as the AARP Tax-Aide Program. In order to continue and to expand operations in Lynchburg, Bedford and surrounding areas, we are looking for volunteers to become qualified tax counselors and greeters.
Click to sendVolunteers should enjoy working with and helping others. Counselors should have experience preparing their own returns; feel comfortable working with computers; attend six required free training sessions and perform homework necessary to become certified. Counselors and greeters should be available to work during two or three half-days each week from Feb. 1 through April 15.
If you are or know of someone who might be interested in joining us in this mentally stimulating, emotionally rewarding, and valuable service to our community, please fill out a volunteer application through the Internet at www.aarp.org/taxaide. You may also contact us through the Lynchburg City Parks and Recreation Templeton Senior Center at (434) 455-4115 or at aarptaxaid@gmail.com. Training will be starting soon.

Rush Homes thanks
On June 16 at Lynchburg College, more than 200 guests attended the annual Rush Homes Dream Builder’s Luncheon to learn about the need for housing for people with disabilities and to support Rush Homes to meet this need. We are very grateful for the outpouring of support and interest.
Rush Homes offers a special thank you to our Dream Builder’s Luncheon sponsors: First National Bank of Altavista, Scott Insurance, Dodson Bros. Exterminating Company, and SunTrust Bank. We also recognize and thank the Virginia Housing Development Authority for providing another challenge gift this year as well as Rebekah Hoskins (Intuitive Works), Chris Tarbell (The Video Guy), and DePaul Community Resources for their in-kind donations. Further, we thank all of our Luncheon Table Captains who made the event possible through their willingness to share the Rush Homes message and invite guests. Last but not least, we thank our many volunteers who provided the support for and organization of the Luncheon.
By the 2000 Census, 1,850 people in Central Virginia had mobility impairments, low incomes, and housing problems. Many more have other types of disabilities impairing their ability to earn incomes and find adequate housing. Rush Homes has over 75 people on the waiting list and that number is growing. Through the Dream Builder’s Luncheon, Rush Homes will help many of these families realize their dream of “home”. Once again, thank you to everyone for your support.
