The Lynchburg Community Action Group has been awarded $363,631 in stimulus funds for use in a Homelessness and Rapid Re-Housing Program.
The money, announced this week, will allow LynCag to provide temporary financial assistance and support services to people who are either homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
“We’re very happy to be able to get this money to help people in need,” said James Mundy, executive director of LynCag. “Things are so dismal for people right now with the way the economy is, some people just need an extra boost to survive until things get better.”
The goal of the program is to prevent homelessness or to quickly re-house and stabilize those who are already homeless.
Organizations across the state have been awarded more than $11 million to carry out these services. The money is expected to be dispersed through the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development by early October.
Those interested in applying for the program should contact LynCag or visit its housing office on the second floor of the Main Street Galleria, 915 Main St.
To qualify, applicants must be at or below 50 percent of the area’s median income and be unable to obtain other housing on their own.
