Virginia lost more than one-half million acres of farmland between 2002 and 2007.
The U.S. Census of Agriculture said the 521,000 lost farm acres is the largest decline in the past 20 years.
Tracking conducted by U.S. farm officials and the American Farmland Trust said some key acres were lost in Virginia counties west of Washington, along the Interstate 95 corridors and in several Southside counties.
A decline in farmland does not always mean the land has been developed, but it may be lying fallow. Still, that makes it more vulnerable to development.
