Virginia panel balks at new oyster rules

»  Comments | Post a Comment

COLONIAL BEACH -- A committee will look at the Potomac River's dwindling oyster population.

The Potomac River Fisheries Commission decided to launch a study rather than create new harvest restrictions to protect the few oysters left in the Potomac. A moratorium also had been considered.

Disease has taken a toll on the Potomac oyster. Only 525 bushels of oysters were taken from the river this year.

The commission asked the study committee to submit its recommendations in June.
