Working together for Lynchburg's kids
Summer camp at the Jubilee Family Center ended Aug. 21, and I would like to thank all the counselors, staff and sponsors who made the program a success. The 10-week program averaged 60 campers each day and featured different weekly programs and daily SOL (Standards of Learning) tutoring/enrichment sessions. Camp sessions were varied and too numerous to list here but included math and history camps, cheerleading and soccer camps as well as gardening and cooking camps. Fun Friday activities included swimming, bowling, skating and a trip to Sweet Briar College sponsored by Select Bank. I would like to thank the following individuals and organizations for their support and help during Summer Camp 2009:

Cooperative Extension, Roland Hayes of Youth Resistance Camp, Dr. Peggy Schimmoeller and Marie Arrington of Randolph College, Dawn Fisher of MC2/Sports Camp, Laura Downing of Jr. Achievement, Heather Sorensen of Crisis Line, Toni Pate and Amy Jennings of Dunbar Middle School, Mike Thomas and Sherri Sackett of Select Bank, Chuck Flournoy and Jon Brooks of Camp Rockmont.
The 2009 camp session was highlighted by a Back to School Pep rally featuring motivational speaker Brenda Morton of Genworth and each camper receiving a backpack filled with age appropriate school supplies for more than 97 students. Many thanks to Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Andy Strader of Optima Health, St. John’s Episcopal Church, the Darren Woods Family and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church for donating these supplies. Due to their overwhelming generosity we were able to distribute supplies to an additional forty families from the neighborhood and give them information regarding after school programs and job training opportunities.
On behalf of the Jubilee staff, summer campers and the 3,000 plus clients who participated in Jubilee’s educational, athletic and occupational programs this past year, I want to again thank the aforementioned individuals and organizations and the Lynchburg community for their unwavering support of the Jubilee Family Center and its programs for the past 10 years.

It’s their job
Del. Shannon Valentine is asking us to re-elect her. In the upcoming term, delegates will have to reapportion our voting districts. Del. Valentine wants someone else — an independent commission — to do this work for her, and she still wants to get paid. If I told you how much I wanted a job, so that someone else could do my work, would you hire me?
