Man hit with reckless driving in school bus collision

»  Comments | Post a Comment

A wreck in Madison Heights on Friday afternoon sent an Amherst County Schools bus driver to the hospital as a precaution after a pickup truck collided with her bus, state police said.

Trooper A.D. Turner said one of the 14 students on the bus at the time complained of wrist pain, but no other injury was reported.

He said driver Jennifer Bennett was taken to the hospital because of concerns about hyperventilation following the wreck.

The wreck happened at about 4 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 29 Business, South Amherst Highway and Lyttleton Lane.

Witnesses to the wreck said the pickup, heading south on Amherst Highway, ran the stoplight and T-boned the bus, which was crossing the highway onto Lyttleton Lane, Turner said.

Donnie Chittum, of Monroe, was charged with reckless driving, Turner said.

Amherst County Schools Superintendent Brian Ratliff said he was pleased with the way Bennett handled the situation.

The students who were on the bus were returned home on another bus.
