Del. Valentine deserves re-election
On Sept. 17, I was one of many citizens present for the Lynchburg Voter’s League candidates forum held at Court Street Baptist Church. I could not help but notice several differences between the two candidates for state delegate.
Click to sendOne candidate, in an apparent attempt to come across as “folksy,” peppered his comments with the frequent use of “ain’t.” The woman next to me said it felt condescending to hear him speak that way.
The other candidate spoke to the audience in her usual articulate, thoughtful and intelligent manner. The woman next to me felt she was being respected by the second candidate.
One candidate often referred to everyone seated as “my friends” as if he must have known all of us quite personally.
The other candidate actually recognized individuals by name and was able to refer to specific situations and issues that she had helped these particular people to address. She didn’t need to simply refer to these folks as her friends. These residents of the local neighborhood really are her friends.
One candidate wanted to emphasize how different he and his opponent are. The other candidate stressed the importance of reaching across the aisle and working in a bipartisan way whenever possible. Her record in the House of Delegates is proof that she works to find common ground in an effort to work on behalf of the citizens of Central Virginia.
I know that I will be casting my vote for the delegate who has built both relationships and a record for integrity and service.
But don’t take my word for it — see for yourself at www.shannonvalentine.net
