Thousands are expected to flock to the streets of downtown Bedford tonight and Saturday for the city’s 28th annual Centerfest.
Nearly 150 vendors are slated to set up along the streets Saturday and about 20 merchants — both shops and restaurants — will be open. The family event will be held rain or shine, according to organizers.
“We are shoulder to shoulder,” Diane Wilson of Bedford Main St. Inc. said of the sold-out space for vendors. “Let’s pray for sunshine.”
Politicians also will set up booths, and search for hands to shake — among those expected are Democratic gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds and Rep. Tom Perriello, D-5th District.
Centerfest kicks off tonight with a concert featuring the Sam Austin Band and Terry Day, a solo performer.
Wilson said on Thursday that 2nd Flyte, a tribute band to The Byrds, originally was slated to perform tonight but has dropped out.
Tonight’s activities, which will feature a number of vendors, runs from 7 to 11 p.m. at the stage of the Farmer’s Market at Washington Street.
Gates open at 6 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and free for ages 12 and under.
Saturday’s festival is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will include an array of vendors and entertainment.
Streets with vendors and other attractions will start closing several hours before Saturday’s event and gradually open at its conclusion later that evening. The Bedford Police Department will host a child-seat safety check at South Street.
Parking is available along other surrounding streets and in areas designated for handicapped parking.
Two stages will feature various entertainment throughout the day at North Bridge Street and East Main Street. Dance teams, bands, chorus groups and a number of individuals are scheduled to perform.
