Five Central Virginia colleges are sponsoring a free how-to workshop on the college application process Saturday at the Florence Elston Inn & Conference Center on Sweet Briar College’s campus.
The goal is to give high school students an “insider’s look” at the admissions process, said Gretchen Tucker, the event organizer and director of admissions at Sweet Briar.
“We just thought there was a need for area students to become better informed about the college application and college search process,” Tucker said. “We’re very different institutions who will come together in a very unified front to present information.”
Participating schools include Central Virginia Community College, James Madison University, Lynchburg College, Randolph College and Sweet Briar. Representatives from each will present topics ranging from an overview of the college search process to the nuts and bolts of writing an effective essay.
The public event targets everyone from freshmen wishing to get a head start to first-generation students who might not have family members to guide them through the process. Parents and family members also are welcome.
Admission counselors will be available to meet one-on-one with students who have specific questions. Students may also bring college essays for feedback from the counselors.
The workshop begins at 9 a.m. with welcoming remarks by Ken Huus, dean of admissions at Sweet Briar.
Seven workshops led by admissions counselors will run concurrently at 9:30 a.m., 10:15 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.
Topics include: “Opportunities of Starting at a Community College” by Ashley Pearson of CVCC; “Overview of the College Search Process” by Laika Tamny of JMU; “Hints on How Colleges Use the SAT/ACT, Curriculum, Grades,” by Sharon Walters-Bower of LC; “Writing the Perfect College Essay” by Margaret Blount of RC; “Mock Admissions Committee” by Ken Huus of Sweet Briar; “Financial Aid Basics for College” by Bobbi Carpenter of Sweet Briar; and “What I Wish I Had Known During My College Search” by a panel of students.
Registration is encouraged but not required. For more information, contact Sweet Briar’s admissions office at (800) 381-6142, (434) 381-6142 or e-mail admissions@sbc.edu.
