ACHIEVEMENTS

Bedford

- Fifty-one Jefferson Forest High School students recently earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams. The following JFHS students qualified for the AP Scholar with Dinstinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams: Catherine Boniface, Emily Boniface, Christopher Deen, Eric Fesmire, David Jackson, Catherine Mohr, Bhaumik Patel, Vatsal Pat and David Whitmore.The following students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams: Christopher Anderson, Blake Belden, Meghan Carter, Samantha Dauer, Stephanie DeRonde, Andrea Gingrich, Kevin Herbst, Joshua Levinson, Amir Tabaian, Winston Thompson and Steve Yang. The following students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher: Emma Aylor, Caroline Ballard, Victoria Blanks, Emily Broman, Justin Bryant, Daniel Burkett, Emily Carter, Natalie Clark, Laura Crites, Amber Edmundson, Erin Fain, Brian Farrell, Marlee Flynt, Alexander Gilley, James Gurdal, Jacob Hill, Brook Hutchison, Abigail Jobe, Patrick Mooney, Dorothy Nugent, James O’Brian, Michael Plazak, Jerry Price, Daniel Rudolph, Caitlin Saloka, Christopher Stanley, Caitlin Stitt, Joshua Storm, Gregory Thompson, Graydon Uyeda and Michael Vanaman.

- Jefferson Forest High School senior Kevin Wheeler was recently named a semifinalist in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Appomattox County

Appomattox Primary School

-Sept.29: Pre-K Literacy Meeting, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

-Oct. 1: Families and Schools Together (FAST) program, a partnership with Central Virginia Community Services, 5:30 to 8 p.m. Free program includes family meal, games, parent networking, fellowship, recreation and prizes. Event held every Thursday until Nov. 19. Families completing the program will receive a family flag, a framed graduation certificate and a framed family photo.

Bedford County

Bedford Middle School

Campbell County

Altavista Elementary School

-Oct. 5: End of first six weeks

Tomahawk Elementary School

-Oct. 3: PTO Fall Carnival, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Brookville Middle School

-Oct. 1 and 8: GOALS Study Skills Workshops, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the BMS Library

Rustburg Middle School

-Today: Final day of PTA Fundraiser

-Sept. 29: Fundraiser order forms due to homeroom teachers

-Oct. 2: School Pictures

-Oct. 5-16: Yearbook Sale ($25)

-Rustburg Middle School T-shirts are on sale in the main office. Youth sizes (white), $8; adult sizes (red), $10.

-RMS is collecting the following items during the school year: General Mills Box Tops, drink tabs for the Ronald McDonald House Charities, and used postage stamps to buy medical supplies. Give these items to homeroom teachers.

Lynchburg

-Heritage and E.C. Glass high schools are working with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank Network to sponsor a two-week food drive starting Oct. 1.

The drive will end at halftime of the Heritage-Glass varsity football game Oct. 16. The schools are encouraging extracurricular groups and athletic teams to donate.

The food bank is soliciting donations of full-size frozen turkeys or the cash equivalent of a frozen turkey, which is $15.

Perrymont Elementary School

-Sept. 30: Professional Development Day for pre-K teachers. No school for pre-K students. School open for all other students.

Sandusky Middle School

-Oct. 8: Sandusky Middle School’s Showcase at Barnes and Noble, 4 to 8 p.m. Events include an overview of the new Sandusky Middle School, opening in 2010, Accelerated Reader awards, performances by the school chorus and band, and math, foreign language and science demonstrations.

E.C. Glass High School

-Sept. 29 and 30 and Oct. 1-3: ‘The Real Inspector Hound,’ Glass Theatre’s Opening Show for the 2009-2010 Season. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Alumni Studio Theatre. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased one hour prior to the performance at the theatre box office. Season tickets are also available (see below). -Tickets are now on sale for E.C. Glass Theatre’s 30th anniversary season. Performances include ‘The Real Inspector Hound,’ ‘Forbidden Broadway,’ ‘Flowers for Algernon,’ ‘Steel Magnolias,’ ‘I Hate Hamlet,’ ‘ The Music Man,’ and ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.’ Season tickets are $50. Heritage High School

Glass football game Oct. 16 at Lynchburg City Stadium, AMF Family Bowling, 1 to 3 p.m. on Oct. 17, and dinner at Charley’s Restaurant with DJ Kool V, 8 p.m. on Oct. 17. - The Bulldog Wrestling Club for boys in grades K-6 will begin at 6 p.m. Nov. 2 with its first practice and parents meeting. Practices will be on Monday, Tuesday and/or Thursday nights from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the LU Wrestling Room. The cost is $35 and includes instruction, club T-shirt, use of a team singlet and awards at the end-of-the-year banquet.
