Old Elkton Farm in Forest is planning a “Derby Afternoon Soiree” on Saturday to raise money for two area nonprofits.
The Bedford County home and its 115 acres, located off U.S. 221 near Perrowville Road, will screen the Kentucky Derby on the side of one its barns. The event also includes a catered buffet dinner, a live band, mint juleps, an open bar and auctions.
Couples & Kids, a Forest-based family counseling center, and The Junior League of Lynchburg joined to organize the event.
Norma White, executive director of Couples & Kids, said it would happen rain or shine and is intended to raise money for a worthy cause.
“Both nonprofits will split any of the proceeds and it will go directly into our program for Central Virginia families and children,” White said.
Royce and Kathy Husted, an inventor and artist who moved to the area 17 years ago, own Old Elkton. It was the former home of the late Cile Turner, a well-known area musician.
“We just fell in love with this part of the country,” Kathy Husted said.
White said the farm on Elkton Farm Road, with its views of the Peaks of Otter, is the perfect place to host such the event.
“We’ve been trying to find a venue to showcase the Kentucky Derby and to have fun,” White said. “It’s just so beautiful here.”
Bedford ranks high in the state in horse ownership and has more than 6,000 horses, according to the latest Virginia Equine Survey. There is a horse for every 10 county residents, according to the survey.
A group of county residents and horse enthusiasts formed a Bedford Equine Association in 2009.
“This is horse country,” White said.
