Former U.S. Sen. George Allen will be in Lynchburg on Saturday morning to promote a book he has written, and also to help raise money for Central Republican Women’s community-service projects.
Allen will sign copies of his book, “What Washington Can Learn From the World of Sports,” during a 10 a.m. reception and brunch, said Lynn Fairchild Martin, spokeswoman for Central Republican Women. The event concludes at noon.
Although many Republicans have voiced a hope that Allen will run for the Senate again in 2012, he hasn’t made any commitments. He has said “perhaps” when reporters asked whether he would run.
“George is our guest,” Martin said. “He is doing this as a favor. We are giving him the opportunity to tell people about the book, and he is coming here to support the program for Central Republican Women.”
The signing will be held at the Academy of Fine Arts’ Warehouse Theater at 600 Main St. in Lynchburg.
The group is asking for sponsorship donations during a 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. reception, Martin said. Sponsorships in the range of $250 to $2,000 are being offered, but donations of any amount will be accepted, Martin said.
A previously announced fee of $50 to attend the book signing between 11 a.m. and noon has been waived, Martin said.
All the funds will remain in the Lynchburg area, Martin said, and support Central Republican Women’s community service projects.
In the past, the group has donated funds to the Blue Ridge Pregnancy Center, an anti-abortion Christian ministry that provides services and support to pregnant women.
The Republican women’s group also originated a Flag Day observance this year and presented an award in appreciation of military service to retired Army Col. Robert Cranston, who lives at Smith Mountain Lake.
Cranston is in the U.S. Army Hall of Fame and is considered to be the father of the Armed Forces Radio and TV Network.
Reservations for the event can be made by calling (434) 401-8890, a number that was corrected after flyers for the signing were distributed, Martin said.
