Appomattox Town Council and the Appomattox Board of Supervisors met Tuesday to discuss the possible expansion of the town’s boundary line down Virginia 24 past Confederate Boulevard and also hiring and sharing an economic developer.
County Administrator Aileen Ferguson said the county has not heard negative feedback concerning the town’s expansion plan after sending letters to all homeowners who would be affected. The number of homeowners was not discussed.
County Attorney Johnny Overstreet said the town’s possible expansion could come if the two bodies hold public hearings, vote to approve the matter and file a petition in circuit court.
Neither body took action to set a public hearing.
Council members and supervisors agreed to postpone the planned discussion regarding an economic developer and wait until they speak with Liz Povar, director of Virginia Economic Development, on Sept. 15. Povar will meet with council members to provide insight into the process of hiring an economic director and establishing a budget.
Board Chairman Gary Tanner said he liked the idea because “we don’t want to rush and get it wrong.”
Supervisor Tom Conrad also agreed.
“Quite frankly, I think we need some guidance,” he said. “ I think that’d be prudent.”
Mayor Paul Harvey said that although he was happy about the latest cooperative efforts, he felt the two bodies might be moving too fast and should focus on completing the U.S. 460 water line.
Council member Steve Conner said he also saw the water line as the most important issue, explaining that he felt the new council members were elected in May because of their support for the water line.
“When are we going to start engineering and building that thing?” Conner asked.
Ferguson said an update to the timeframe of the water line’s construction is expected at today’s water line committee meeting at 6 p.m. at the Appomattox Municipal Building.
