ACHIVEMENTS
Bedford
- Liberty High School senior Liza Mackey was chosen as one of three finalists from her Congressional District for the $10,000 Harry W. Byrd Jr. Leadership Scholarship. Mackey was interviewed in Richmond by Senator Harry W. Byrd Jr., his son, Thomas T. Byrd, Attorney General William C. Mims, and Justice Donald W. Lemons. One high school senior from each of Virginia’s 11 Congressional Districts will win a $10,000 scholarship.
Lynchburg
- Heritage High School sophomore Andy Locascio was one of only 10 students nationwide to receive a scholarship to a weeklong nature photography program in conjunction with the Nature Photography Summit presented by the North American Nature Photography Association. The award was based on Locascio’s interest and accomplishments in nature photography as evidence by his portfolio and his answers to essay questions. The summit will be held in Reno, Nev., Feb. 16-19.

- The staff and students of Bedford Hills Elementary School collected $1,400 in change as part of K-92 radio station’s Penny Pick-up for Haiti held recently to benefit American Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti.
