The Virginia Senate today passed a host of House bills that impact hunting and fishing in the commonwealth.
House Bill 399 would prohibit anyone who obtains a "kill permit" to take care of a nuisance or damage issue involving a bear or deer or other wildlife from then mounting or stuffing the animal for display. The bill also requires the hunter to either butcher the animal or dispose of it within 24 hours.
House Bill 940 would reduce the maximum fine for hunting and trapping violations from a Class 1 misdemeanor of a $2,500 fine and up to a year in jail to a fine of no more than $500.
House Bill 1291 would prohibit any out of state commercial fisherman from obtaining a Virginia license unless the home state of that fisherman grants commercial licenses to Virginia fishermen.
The bills now head to the office of Gov. Bob McDonnell for consideration.
Senators today also approved House legislation (HB 326) that would allow localities to establish a program for the recycling of mercury-based thermostats and prohibit the dumping of mercury thermostats in private landfills based in localities that have a recycling program.
