Snow has delayed the Amherst County Public Schools Education Foundation fundraiser luncheon, which was scheduled for Friday and now will be held at noon Feb. 19 at Winton Country Club.
The luncheon is a key fundraiser for the foundation, which has raised thousands of dollars and distributed mini-grants for classroom teachers’ needs countywide.
School system administrators conduct a needs assessment and advise the foundation about how mini-grants could be best spent.
In the past six years, the foundation has awarded more than 150 grants totaling more than $75,000. Teachers submit requests twice yearly and are awarded up to $1,000 based on the need and the number of students affected.
Last fall, $6,972.14 was distributed to 22 teachers to buy equipment that benefited more than 1,600 students in 19 classes from kindergarten to 12th grade, including GED students, according to the foundation. The district has nearly 4,700 students.
Glad Manufacturing Co. most recently donated $12,000 to the foundation, after having donated $9,000 previously.
The donations paid for classroom equipment and materials those teachers otherwise would not have received.
“We raise it and then we put it right back into the schools,” said the foundation’s executive director, Shelley Andrews said.
The fundraiser at Winton is free but by invitation. To RSVP to attend, call Andrews at (434) 316-3900, e-mail educationfoundation@amherst.k12.va.us or write to the foundation, P.O. Box 1425, Amherst, VA 24521.
The foundation has two other fundraisers yearly: a June golf tournament and a $5,000 Back to School Raffle in September.
