The Bedford County Board of Supervisors is blowing into the new year with talks today of possibly forming a new ordinance regulating wind turbines.
Roger Henderson, a business owner who lives on Virginia 122 north of the city of Bedford, asked supervisors last month to consider regulating wind energy systems.
The Bedford County Planning Commission would likely make recommendations to the board if it decides to move forward.
Mary Zirkle, the county’s chief of planning, is set to meet with the board during its 5 p.m. work session to discuss the possibility.
Henderson, whose land in the Sedalia area is prone to wind from nearby mountains, has said he would like to put a wind tower up this year.
Wind ordinances have been a popular topic among Virginia localities in recent years. Amherst and Nelson counties passed ordinances in 2009 regulating small wind turbines.
Also today, the board is expected to select Supervisor Roger Cheek as its chairman for 2010 along with a new vice chairman during its 7:30 p.m. meeting.
Cheek, who represents District 3, which includes the Huddleston and New London areas, would replace Forest District Supervisor John Sharp in the role. He was elected to a new four-year term in November.
Supervisors are also set to hear from County Administrator Kathleen Guzi tonight on the process of adopting the upcoming 2010-11 budget, which she has said would include cuts to services due to “unprecedented” drops in state revenue.
The board is scheduled to start holding budget work sessions next month and will likely set a public hearing on April 5 to gather citizens’ input. It would likely adopt the budget and set tax rates April 12.
The meeting takes place at the county administration building at 122 East Main St. in Bedford.
