Bedford County School Board members will roll up their sleeves Thursday for the first of several planned work sessions to piece together the division’s upcoming 2010-11 budget.
The board is set to meet at 2 p.m. to discuss the budget; during the 7 p.m. regular meeting, it will hold a public hearing to take comments on suggested budget needs.
The board plans to hold four more work sessions before approving a plan in March and submitting it to the Bedford County Board of Supervisors, according to a schedule from school officials that states final adoption is targeted for April.
Another public hearing is set for Feb. 25 on a draft budget.
For Thursday’s public hearing, school officials are encouraging citizens to sign up prior to the meeting by calling (540) 586-1045, ext. 257. Comments are limited to three minutes and the hearing will not extend past 7:30 p.m., according to the division’s Web site.
Also today, the board will select a chairman and vice chairman for the upcoming year, make assignments to various committees and establish a 2010 meeting schedule.
Board members are also set to approve a new procedure for adding or deleting sports and activities at middle and high schools and select school year calendars for 2010-11 and 2011-12.
An evaluation committee is also set to report on The Bedford Academy of Virtual Learning, a program that offers online learning for students enrolled in kindergarten through seventh grade.
The 2 p.m. session takes place at the Bedford County School Board Office at 310 South Bridge St. in Bedford and the 7 p.m. hearing takes place at the Bedford Science and Technology Center, 600 Edmund St. in Bedford.
