RICHMOND — Newly elected Del. Scott Garrett, R-Lynchburg, was appointed to the House Committee on Health, Welfare and Institutions on Wednesday in his first official day in Richmond.
Garrett, the newcomer among an otherwise-veteran group of Lynchburg-region delegates, also will serve on the House Finance Committee and its Transportation Committee.
Garrett said his 30 years of practice as a general surgeon will be valuable on the Health, Welfare and Institutions panel. Two other physicians also are on the committee: Del. John O’Bannon, R-Richmond, and Del. Chris Stolle, R-Virginia Beach.
He will make U.S. 29 interests one of his priorities on the Transportation Committee, Garrett said.
Del. William Howell, speaker of the House, announced the committee appointments.
Howell said he made the appointments based on the proportion of Republicans and Democrats in the House — which has 61 Republicans, two independents and 38 Democrats.
The committees, most of which have 22 members, will consist of 14 Republicans and eight Democrats.
