RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Gov. Tim Kaine says Senate Democrats are right to demand that Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell's choice for commerce secretary step down from three corporate boards.
Kaine said during a live video feed with the Richmond Times-Dispatch on Friday that Democrats raised a legitimate issue — whether Commerce Secretary-designate Robert Sledd's involvement with the companies creates a conflict of interest.
Senate Democrats have said they have the votes to block Sledd's confirmation.
Kaine said he would not have allowed any member of his Cabinet to serve on corporate boards.
Sledd and McDonnell's other Cabinet appointments will be sworn in on Sunday, but the House and Senate must confirm them in order for them to officially take office.
