ACHIEVEMENTS
Bedford
• The following Thaxton Elementary School students were winners of the Bedford County PTA Reflections Contest: Nessa Molnar-Suhajda, first place, Literature (grades 6-8); Corbett McKinney, first place, Photography (grades 6-8); Zachery Key, second place, Music (grades 3-5); Joshua Leamy, second place, Photography (grades pre-K-2); and Hunter Alto, third place, Literature (grades 3-5).
Lynchburg
• Bedford Hills Elementary School has earned the 2010 Governor's Award for Educational Excellence, the highest honor under the Virginia Index of Performance (VIP). To qualify for the Governor's Award for Educational Excellence, Bedford Hills met all state and federal achievement benchmarks for two consecutive years and achieved applicable excellence goals for elementary reading and participation in the Virginia Preschool Initiative. The school also won bonus points on the Governor's Nutrition and Physical Activity Scorecard. Dearington Elementary School for Innovation and Paul Munro and Sheffield elementary schools earned the 2010 Board of Education Competence to Excellence Award for meeting all state and federal benchmarks for at least two years and making progress toward the goals of the governor and the Virginia Board of Education.
• The following William Marvin Bass Elementary School students were recently named ‘Terrific Kids’ by the Lynchburg Kiwanis Club: Jasmine Evans, Emily Ruiz, Alexys King, JaVon Eubanks, Dakota Bryant, Michael Doss, Vernon Dudley, Autumn Banks, Daron Hubbard, Addison King, Spencer Almond, Chloe Bort, Isiah Douglas, Jordan Johnson, Bethany Duncan, Brian Hunt and Arionn Kiser.
Private Schools
• Liberty Christian Academy 11th-grader Sadie Maynard won $500 in a photography competition sponsored by Regal Theatre at River Ridge mall. Her photograph and many others are currently on display outside the theater.
• Liberty Christian Academy Bible teacher Scott Hyland recently published his first book, ‘The Five Laws of Liberty: Defending a Biblical View of Freedom.’ The book examines scripture passages that deal specifically with the concept of freedom.
