A worker at a Timberlake Road convenience store post office pleaded guilty Tuesday in U.S. District Court to embezzling federal funds.
Sarah Lynn DeLorge, 49, of Lynchburg, stole a little more than $10,000 between April and December, Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Mott told Judge Norman Moon.
DeLorge confessed in early December when local Postal Service administrators told her they would be auditing the finances at her location, Mott told the court. He said DeLorge claimed she used the money for a family member who was having trouble supporting herself, and said she had plans to return it when her husband got a work bonus.
“She told (the investigator) she had put back $2,000,” Mott said.
He said after the hearing that the theft was made in cash and stamps.
Larry Shelton, DeLorge’s attorney, told the judge the woman’s own accounting of the theft showed she stole about $9,100.
Shelton said the amount will be important at her sentencing hearing because there is a $10,000 threshold in federal sentencing guideline calculations.
She is free pending sentencing, which is scheduled for Oct. 12.
