Appomattox Town Manager Bart Van Nieuwenhuise resigned his position Tuesday after about 14 months on the job.
The resignation followed a meeting Tuesday with Town Attorney Frank Wright, Mayor Paul Harvey and Vice Mayor Jimmy Mayberry, according to Van Nieuwenhuise’s letter of resignation to Harvey and Town Council members.
“The purpose of this resignation is the realization that a mutual understanding exists that my continuing service is not in the best interests of both parties,” the letter stated.
Town officials would not comment on the resignation, calling it a personnel matter.
Town Council members will meet Monday to discuss and vote about the terms outlined in the resignation letter, which asks for three months in severance pay and 90 days of continued medical insurance.
In March, council members voted to place Van Nieuwenhuise on unpaid administrative leave for eight days. Town officials declined to give a reason for the decision.
Town officials also received a second resignation Tuesday from Philip Ouellette, the town’s water and wastewater treatment supervisor. Roxanne Paulette, the town clerk, said Ouellette worked with the town for three months.
The Town Council also Monday will consider and authorize the town clerk to advertise for both a new town manager and water and wastewater treatment supervisor.
The resignations follow a one-hour closed session meeting Monday to discuss personnel matters concerning “employee A” and “employee B.”
Van Neiuwenhuise served as town manager for a little more than a year, when he was hired in late April 2009, after the former town manager retired in February 2009.
