The pets at the Lynchburg Humane Society need more than homes this summer. They need more food and more volunteers too.
“We’re desperate for food right now, our pantry is bare right now so to speak,” said Makena Yarbrough, executive director of the Lynchburg Humane Society. “We just have so many animals that we’re caring for right now.”
It’s normal for the number of shelter guests to increase in the summer. There are almost 200 pets at the shelter and another 45 in foster care.
So, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Friday at Sam’s Club on Ward’s Road in Lynchburg, Clear Channel’s Sunny FM will collect pet food donations for the Humane Society.
Yarbrough said the biggest need is for wet, non-fish kitten food. The agency has so many kittens right now that it is offering a two-for-one sale through July 25. Yarbrough said she also needs dry cat food without any dyes. The Humane Society’s cats prefer Purina Cat Chow, she said. Cats, also in abundance, are adoptable for half-price through July 25.
As for dog food, the agency needs mixes for all breeds and ages. Yarbrough said her staff wouldn’t turn away those who want to donate pet toys, too.
“It makes us feel better if they have something to play with,” she said.
Because of the high number of pets being cared for there is also a need for more volunteers to work at the shelter and to serve as foster parents. At 11 a.m. Thursday and 3 p.m. next Monday, July 26, the Humane Society will hold volunteer orientations for anyone interested in helping out. Yarbrough asks that if volunteers are under the age of 17, they bring a parent with them to volunteer.
The next big event for the shelter is the second annual Kitten Shower on Aug. 7. Yarbrough said the event will feature amazing adoption prices.
