American Legion Board-Canady Post 54 of Bedford is fighting for the National D-Day Memorial to remove a bust of soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.
The executive committee of the post updated a resolution Friday that was unanimously adopted in November 2009 opposing the bust, installed earlier this month at the memorial. It urges the memorial’s board of directors to remove the statue that joined others of Allied leaders on site, including presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
The Stalin piece has caused protests among veterans and area residents who feel it is not suited for the Bedford site.
The resolution states the bust “is seen by members of the post and by many others as granting Stalin a place of honor” and has little to do with the memorial’s purpose. The resolution also states concerns of potential adverse affects on visitation and volunteering.
Officials at the memorial have stood by the decision to include Stalin despite public opposition.
