The Amherst County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to enter into negotiations with a Danville-based company to design a county office facility.
The proposed offices would be located across from the county’s main administrative complex on Washington Street in Amherst. The property, now owned by the county, was the site of the former Amherst Baptist Church building.
The structure that once housed the church would be demolished if county officials decide to build a new facility.
Supervisors have debated expanding county offices for more than two years, but have not formally approved a plan.
The board’s vote Tuesday passed 4-1, with member Claudia Tucker against it. Supervisor Frank Campbell said he would vote yes as long as there were no costs linked with the board’s action.
Chairman Chris Adams said the board’s vote means the county will begin contract negotiations with Dewberry, a company in Danville. The action is not an official award for construction to start, Adams said.
The potential expansion could house departments such as the Commissioner of the Revenue, Treasurer, extension office, planning and zoning, building inspections and environmental health.

- Amherst County Public Schools’ Superintendent Brian Ratliff told supervisors he plans to recommend a 2010-11 schools’ budget on March 11 to the Amherst County School Board. The division faces a minimum of $2.8 million in reduced funding, Ratliff said, and it could grow to more than $4 million depending on a final version of the state budget.
- Because of snow, supervisors canceled a citizen forum on the county’s 2010-2011 budget that was set for 6 p.m. The board is set to host a similar forum for citizens to present budget concerns on March 16 at the Amherst Education Center in Madison Heights.
