CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (AP) -- A special prosecutor says the fatal shooting of a man by a Montgomery County sheriff's deputy during a standoff was justified.
Michael Eugene Potts was fatally shot on Dec. 30 by Deputy Joseph Collins after police from Christiansburg pursued a pickup truck driven by Potts into Montgomery County.
The truck crashed into an off-duty sheriff's deputy's vehicle, then attempted to back over officers after it was stopped. Police say Potts threatened to kill his 2-year-old daughter, who was in the truck.
Salem Commonwealth's Attorney Tom Bowers said Tuesday that Collins acted appropriately because he had a reasonable belief that the child and other officers were in danger.
