Appomattox town resident Clifford Harvey presented council members with a petition signed by almost 500 residents, requesting that the town join forces with the county in support of the U.S. 460 water line.
The town and county have yet to sign a contract giving the town access to the water line, though the two bodies have discussed the matter for years.
The town currently runs on a public well system.
Harvey said at a council meeting Monday that the petition represented 50 percent of water users in Appomattox. That total included 338 town residents, 62 town business owners and 87 out-of-town residents, he said.
Harvey said that by signing the petition, residents agreed to three tenets: that the water line would increase the county’s economic development, lower the overall water rate for town customers and provide a lasting solution to the problems the town has experienced with abnormal metal levels in their well water.
No action was taken by council on this issue.
