Attorney: Appomattox Town Manager not on unpaid leave

Appomattox Town Manager Bart Van Nieuwenhuise has not been placed on administrative leave, but was not in the office Friday, Town Attorney Frank Wright said.

Wright’s statement follows statements made Wednesday by Mayor Paul Harvey and Town Council member Jennifer Jamerson-Scruggs that Van Nieuwenhuise had been placed on unpaid leave for eight days. Neither Harvey nor Jamerson-Scruggs would give a reason for the action, or say when it occurred.

The Town Council did meet in closed session Monday night, but no action was taken after they reconvened in open session and no mention of Van Nieuwenhuise was made during the public part of the meeting.

Wright did not give a reason for Van Nieuwenhuise’s absence from work Friday, calling it a “personnel issue.”

“At this point, there’s really been no official action taken,” Wright said in an interview.

Van Nieuwenhuise has not been in the office since Wednesday, said town clerk Roxanne Paulette.

Mayor Paul Harvey has called for a special Town Council meeting at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

A news release from the mayor said there will be two closed-session items, including one that involves “the performance and discipline of a specific public employee, specifically being Employee A.”

The other item is to consult with legal counsel about “a potential claim from Fielder’s Choice Enterprises, Inc. for repair work at the Appomattox Reclamation Facility.”

The release also states that action by council on the two closed-session items will be considered.

The meeting will be held at the Appomattox Municipal Building, 210 Linden St., in Appomattox.
