A Java man was arrested Sunday afternoon after ramming his car into the back of another car several times and firing his revolver into the air, according to Virginia State Police.
Melvin Ray Emerson, 69, was driving a 1985 Cadillac Deville on Spring Garden Road in Blairs when a 2004 BMW four-door sedan passed him, a news release stated.
Emerson struck the BMW from behind with his Cadillac at least three times before the BMW turned into a driveway at a home in the 500 block of Brownsville Heights Lane in Java.
Emerson struck the BMW again as it turned into the driveway, causing it to rotate and strike the front porch. Emerson then got out of his Cadillac and fired one round from a .38 caliber revolver into the air and then ran from the scene at around 1:15 p.m.
Eddie Lee Dixon, 42, of Chatham was driving the BMW and sustained a back injury from the incident. His 6-year-old son also suffered back and head injuries. Both were treated and released from Danville Regional Medical Center.
Dixon’s father, Jerry Dixon, said his son and the 6-year-old were OK after the wreck.
Emerson fled the driveway scene, driving north on Route 640 from Halifax Road. He lost control of his Cadillac on a curve and struck a tree on the left side of the road.
He then caught a ride to his home on Adams Farm Road from a woman passerby.
Police found Emerson hiding in a grove of Leland cypress trees at the back of his home. He was arrested by Deputy Mike Hill of the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.
Emerson was charged with malicious wounding, three counts of felony hit and run and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
The revolver was recovered from the Cadillac crash site.
He is being held at the Pittsylvania County Jail without bond, the release continued. Emerson’s court appearance is scheduled for March 29 at 8:30 a.m. in Pittsylvania County General District Court, according to a news release from the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office release stated several people have called about the case. The investigating agency is the Virginia State Police.
