Appomattox votes on town manager's suspension

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Appomattox Town Council voted to place Town Manager Bart Van Nieuwenhuise on unpaid administrative leave for eight days during a special session Tuesday.

However, Van Nieuwenhuise has “unofficially” been on administrative leave since March 9, according to a news release issued Tuesday by Town Mayor Paul Harvey.

Neither Mayor Paul Harvey nor council members gave a reason behind the move but the release stated that council members could not release additional details because the decision regarded “personnel matters.”

The vote was unanimous and there was no discussion.

The release states that council members reached “a consensus in closed session as it is permitted under the Freedom of Information Act but did not take a formal vote” on the issue at their March 9 meeting.

Council members informed Van Nieuwenhuise of their consensus on March 9, when his administrative leave unofficially began, the release stated.

The special session on Tuesday was called, in part, to “ratify and approve the administrative leave” that council members agreed to in closed session on March 9, the release states.

Harvey declined to answer questions after the meeting.
