Former Amherst County Attorney Vaden Hunt on Wednesday challenged statements supervisors made Tuesday regarding his termination earlier this month.
At a regular scheduled meeting, supervisors voted unanimously to ask for Hunt’s permission to disclose the board’s reasons for terminating his employment.
In his statement, Hunt said it was “utterly shocking” supervisors Chris Adams, Don Kidd and Ray Vandall “are now leading the charge seeking my permission to release the reasons for my termination, when no reasons were given, and no reasons existed, on March 2, 2010, the date of my termination.”
He compared actions taken by those three supervisors with the “forced resignation” of former county administrator Rodney Taylor in April 2009.
“They make a rash decision that is not ethical, warranted or in the best interests of Amherst County citizens or staff,” the statement said.
“After facing intense public scrutiny regarding their decision, Adams, Kidd and Vandall attempt to retroactively create ‘supposed’ reasons justifying their improper actions.
“I will not stand by and allow Adams, Kidd and Vandall another opportunity to manufacture nonexistent reasons, half-truths and distortions in an attempt to save-face and further sully my personal and professional reputation.”
Hunt was terminated in a 3-2 vote by the board March 2.
Chairman Chris Adams said in an interview last week that the reasons behind Hunt’s termination were not disclosed to the public out of consideration for Hunt.
Kidd, who put forth the motion Tuesday, said the reasons needed to be made public.
In his statement, Hunt wrote, “I will happily grant permission to release any and all of my formal, written job performance evaluations that occurred between during my tenure as Amherst County Attorney.”
Hunt has previously said that he never received a written job performance evaluation during his tenure.
