Fish called menhaden apparently don't do a lot to help cleanse the Chesapeake Bay, a new study says.
Menhaden are small, oily, nearly inedible fish that are important links in the bay's food chain.
For years, many people said menhaden also help the bay by filtering out algae that foul bay waters.
But the recent study by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science suggests the filter feeders have little net effect on the bay's overall water quality.
