Saturday, March 21, 2009 police say Beacher Hackney shot two people inside The Homestead kitchen and was caught in surveillance video leaving the crime scene.
Fast forward nearly a year later and Hackney is still on the minds of law enforcement.
Bath County Sheriff’s Department’s lead investigator, Noel Dunnagan, thought by now he would see Hackney behind bars, not in a wanted picture above his desk.
“In the first week or two I would have thought we would have had him by then,” Dunnagan explained. “The worst part of it is we ain’t caught the guy yet and everyday I’m coming in the morning hoping I’ve got something new to work on.”
So with no creditable leads or trace of the suspect, we wanted to know where investigators are in the search.
“At this time we’re still collecting leads from America’s Most Wanted,” said Bath County Sheriff, Larry Norfleet.
The story has aired several times and has brought in dozens of leads, but none of which have lead to the suspect, so after a while you have to wonder is he still alive.
“I still think he’s alive,” said Norfleet. “Due to the fact that he had a hermit nature, you know, he could certainly exist inside for sometime as long has he had supplies.”
The sheriff says his office does keep the victim’s family members up to date on the investigation, there’s actually a memorial planned for this Sunday, March 21, at 2 p.m. at The Homestead.
On a file on investigator Dunnagan’s desk it’s listed as case number 09080922, but for many in the area an arrest is about justice for two men and their families.
