BEDFORD - Bedford County Schools Superintendent Douglas Schuch has presented a revised budget proposal that no longer calls for consolidating two elementary schools and slashing more than 100 jobs.
Schuch presented a new recommendation to the Bedford County School Board on Wednesday based on new "hard figures" from the recently adopted state budget. About $3.5 million the division stood to lose from changes in the state's local composite index formula would be restored at 100 percent, Schuch said, and school officials now expect to have to contribute $2.8 million less to employees' retirement.
The schools' projected operating budget now stands at $93.4 million, a $6.6 million decrease from the current year.
Schuch in February proposed a budget that recommended more than 120 job cuts to offset what was feared to be a $7 million reduction in funding, and closing elementary schools in Thaxton and Body Camp. The new recommendation restores 62 jobs and the remaining layoffs are expected to be reduced from early retirements.
School board members are set to approve the budget Thursday and submit it to the Bedford County Board of Supervisors.
