RUSTBURG — Campbell County School Board members voted Monday to lay off 33 certified employees, most of whom are teachers. Superintendent Robert Johnson said the division notified the employees on Friday that they are slated to lose their jobs.
The now-official reduction in force is a byproduct of the division’s $72 million school budget for 2010-2011 that was approved in March. Johnson said then that 45 teachers would lose their jobs, but on Tuesday he said more teachers had chosen to retire or leave voluntarily, leading to fewer layoffs.
Johnson said that the division is cutting the equivalent of 68 full-time certified positions, a category than includes staff like teachers and administrators, and 35 classified positions, which include jobs like custodians and bus drivers.
Of the 68 certified position cuts, Johnson said 35 will occur through attrition — for example, people retiring or quitting — but 33 of the position cuts mean people will lose their jobs.
The reduction in force is hitting some teaching forces harder than others, in part due to the criteria for the reduction in force, which include seniority. The division is cutting five current certified staff members at Leesville Road Elementary School but none from Altavista Elementary School, Gladys Elementary School or the Campbell County Technical Center.
Johnson stressed those staff cuts do not reflect which schools will lose positions overall, as teachers and other staff can be moved from school to school.
The board’s action came by way of a routine approval of a personnel report during the meeting, following a vote to adopt the school division’s comprehensive plan.
