Dr. Joseph H. Callicott Jr. received the 12th annual Barney Award, presented by the Lynchburg Academy of Medicine. The award recognizes a member physician who has worked to promote the academy of medicine.
A large group of physicians, spouses and hospital staff attended the awards reception Wednesday night.
Nygaard, a cardiologist at The Cardiovascular Group of the Stroobants Heart Center, has practiced medicine in Lynchburg for 27 years and has helped lead the development and expansion of cardiovascular services in the region.
He was instrumental in developing Virginia’s first acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) center at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital’s emergency department. Through those efforts, deaths from acute heart attacks were cut in half.
Nygaard has also been an advocate for cardiovascular access in outlying communities, leading to satellite offices in Farmville, Danville, and Smith Mountain Lake.
In patient satisfaction surveys, Nygaard’s personal scores consistently rank him in the top 1 percent of physicians nationally for patient satisfaction.
A former member of the Lynchburg School Board, Callicott is a retired pathologist who worked to provide laboratory and pathology services in Lynchburg. As president of the Lynchburg Academy of Medicine he helped organize a society that would benefit patient care and the medical providers who offer the care.
Callicott came to Lynchburg in 1968 after completing military service with the 101st Airborne in Fort Campbell, Ky.
He served on numerous academy committees and was president of the Lynchburg Academy of Medicine from 1979 to 1980. He also served as delegate to the Medical Society of Virginia for several years.
At Lynchburg General he served as chief of staff and was active in overseeing the Lynchburg Family Practice Residency Program in its early years.
