Racing Under the Stars to benefit Jubilee Center

»  Comments | Post a Comment

An evening of races, food and fun is planned as a fundraiser for Lynchburg’s Jubilee Family Development Center.

Racing Under the Stars is a major fundraiser for the center, which pulled itself from the brink of shutting down earlier this year after donations plummeted.

The catered event, at Randolph College’s Claire Noyes Cox Indoor Arena, will be held Sept. 11 and will feature taped horse races displayed on large screens where guests will be able to place bets using “funny money,” according to the center’s news release.

There will also be live and silent auctions for an all-expense-paid trip to New York with tickets to a fashion week show, an all-expense paid trip to Hollywood with tickets to a movie premiere, and others items.

Organizers hope to raise $75,000 for the Jubilee Center, with about 500 people in attendance.

“’Racing Under the Stars’ will be a great fun evening,” said event chairman Brooks Morrison in a news release. “But, it’s more than that; it’s a night that will directly benefit the kids who depend on Jubilee for mentoring and nurturing support. We want to showcase how we as a community can make a difference.”

The event comes after the Jubilee Center issued a plea to the community, needing $130,000 by the end of June to stabilize its rocky finances and save the center from closing. The community came through with individual donations as well as churches, fundraising dinners, raffles and other grassroots efforts.

Sterling Wilder, the center’s executive director, said previously Jubilee has taken steps to shore up its finances in hopes of remaining sustainable, including cutting salaries, charging more for its facilities and appointing a new board treasurer.

Jubilee was founded in 1999 to target at-risk youth with programs and services to develop their academic and social skills and help position them for a successful future. It serves more than 4,000 children and their families each year.

Tickets for the event at $50 per person, and VIP packages of 10 tickets can be purchased for $1,000. For a full like of items to be auctioned, visit www.jubileefamily.org.

For more information or to buy tickets, visit the website or call (434) 845-0433. Tickets can be purchased at Market at Main, Givens Books, Silver Thistle, Aylors, Play it Again Sports and the Jubilee Center.
