A city park will be rededicated to its namesake in a ceremony Monday.
A new plaque will be unveiled at the Jefferson Park on York Street in Lynchburg in honor of Thomas Randolph Jefferson — not the famous president.
This Jefferson, an African-American born in 1864, was the caretaker of that land and had a log cabin on the property.
He died in 1940 at the age of 75. The park was named for him in the late 1930s.
Ted Delaney, of the Old City Cemetery, said Jefferson was a bit of a local celebrity who everyone would have known in the 1930s.
A newspaper article in The Daily Advance noted Jefferson “shook hands with presidents, served banquets to generals and spent much of his life in the presence of notables.”
The rededication will begin at the park at 11:30 a.m. Monday, with local historians and city officials present.
