Perriello to debate Clark; will face Hurt in October

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Two candidates for Congress, Rep. Tom Perriello and independent Jeffrey Clark, will appear in a debate Thursday night sponsored by the Nelson County Chamber of Commerce.

The 7 p.m. event at Nelson County High School will not include the Republican candidate, state Sen. Robert Hurt, who has refused to appear in debates that include Clark.

The Hurt and Perriello campaigns also said Wednesday that the two candidates would appear together in a half-hour show on WSLS-10 in Roanoke on Oct. 13.

Their appearance will include “an informal conversation about the issues,” and will not be a formal debate, said Melissa Preas, news director of WSLS. It will be broadcast during the station’s 6 p.m. time slot that normally is a newscast.

As of Wednesday, the Oct. 13 event would be the first joint appearance on TV for Perriello and Hurt.

They also are scheduled for two televised debates. The first would be on Oct. 19 in Charlottesville. The second, on Oct. 21, is to be telecast in Lynchburg and Charlottesville.

Hurt was scheduled to be in Texas today for a campaign fund-raising event being held for him by two Dallas-area congressmen, Rep. Pete Sessions and Rep. Jed Hensarling.

Sessions is chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, which focuses on helping GOP candidates win House races.
