The anti-tax group Americans for Prosperity brought its “November is Coming” bus to Liberty University in Lynchburg Thursday for a stop in its tour through Virginia this week.
Several Republican politicians, including Dels. Scott Garrett of Lynchburg and Kathy Byron of Campbell County, delivered remarks about the importance of taking back power in Congress in this fall’s elections and reducing the size of government.
They never named specific candidates, and the event’s master of ceremonies, 6th District Republican chairwoman Trixie Averill of Roanoke County, said the group wasn’t supporting any particular candidate.
The black “November is Coming” bus was parked in front of the LU dining hall at lunchtime, but the speeches were delivered mostly to a crowd of about 30 Lynchburg residents who had gathered for the event.
Liberty students didn’t show much interest. Hundreds of students walked into the dining hall without stopping to hear the politicians speak, although a few of them paused briefly.
Two students did stop at the rally to pick up brochures supplied by Americans for Prosperity. They were Caroline Biggs, a junior from Portland, Ore., and Josh Hetzler, a junior from Chesterfield County. Both are officers in LU’s College Republicans club.
The AFP bus also made stops Thursday in Charlottesville, Rocky Mount and Danville.
Today, it is scheduled to visit Abingdon, Wytheville and Roanoke.
