Calvin Falwell honored at Hillcats game

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The Hillcats game started off with a somber note as a moment of silence was held in honor of Calvin Falwell, the man who was largely responsible for bringing and keeping a minor league baseball team in Lynchburg. The Hillcats also will honor Falwell by leaving the flag in center field at halfstaff for the rest of the season.

Falwell, who died Saturday night at the age of 90, brought the Carolina League to Lynchburg in 1966 when he formed and became the president of the Lynchburg Baseball Corporation. The baseball field at City Stadium was named after Falwell in 2004 and in 2005 he was named the “King of Baseball” at the Baseball Winter Meetings.

“He’s a baseball icon,” said Hillcats general manager Paul Sunwall, who is in 32nd year with the organization. “He was really the force behind what kept baseball in Lynchburg for years. To this day (the Lynchburg Baseball Corporation) still has the same goal: to keep baseball in Lynchburg for the enjoyment of the everyone here. And that’s what we are going to proceed to do.”

Lynchburg didn’t waste anytime in getting on the scoreboard, jumping out to an early lead by scoring six runs in the first two innings and cruising to a 12-1 victory Sunday against Stadium.

The Hillcats’ win, coupled with Potomac’s 15-3 loss to Winston-Salem, leaves Lynchburg five games behind the Nationals with 13 games to play, including four games against Potomac in Lynchburg beginning Aug. 30.

“It was a good performance,” Lynchburg outfielder L.V, Ware said. “We are taking it game by game. We are checking on Potomac everyday, but we can’t control what they do. We just have to go out there and get a win every day.”

Lynchburg exploded for six runs in the sixth when the team brought 11 batters to the plate. Andrelton Simmons, Joe Leonard (2), Barrett Kleinknecht and L.V. Ware all drove in at least a run in the sixth.

The Hillcats finished with 13 hits, including five doubles and a tworun home run by Todd Cunningham. Lynchburg struck out just once in the game and all but one Hillcat had at least one hit and an RBI.

Simmons went 3-for- 4 with three runs, and two RBIs, Cunningham, Leonard and Christian Bethancourt each added two hits to Hillcats’ total.

Lynchburg’s Caleb Brewer got the start and was masterful on the mound. He allowed three hits and six walks. Brewer struck out four and earned his first win in his second start for Lynchburg.

“We got good pitching and put the game away in the sixth inning,” Hillcats manager Luis Salazar said. “It’s a sad day for Lynchburg baseball. I didn’t get to meet (Falwell), but I heard he did a lot for baseball in Lynchburg. It’s a sad day for baseball. Our prayers are with his family.”

The Hillcats begin a sixgame road trip on Tuesday with three games against Myrtle Beach and three games against Kinston before returning home for the four game-series against Potomac.
