Lynchburg City Council’s next work session will be held at the Miller Center, rather than City Hall, in order to let officials tour the building and learn more about its planned renovation.
The Miller Center, located at 301 Grove St., serves as both a community center and the administrative headquarters of Lynchburg’s Parks & Recreation Department. The circa-1911 structure, which was originally a school, has been slated for a major renovation for some time. In December, officials had to cancel all of its after-school and other community programs for two days because the heating system went on the fritz.
The city has already spent $213,840 on renovations for the Miller Center in recent years, although no money was earmarked for it this year, according to budget documents. Current renovation plans — which call for an overhaul of all utility systems, interior facility upgrades and a roof replacement — anticipate that $5 million will be invested in the building over the next two years.
Council will hold its next work session at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The full agenda for the meeting has not yet been released. Council’s regular evening meeting, which starts at 7:30 p.m., will be held at its usual location in City Hall, 900 Church St.
