RICHMOND — The House of Delegates gave Del. Lacey Putney, I-Bedford, a standing ovation Wednesday because he was beginning his 50th year in the House.
Putney’s seat was empty when the other 97 delegates began cheering. He emerged from the House lounge after about 30 seconds to acknowledge the recognition.
Later, Putney explained that he didn’t know House Majority Leader Kirk Cox was planning to start the 2011 session by recognizing his half-century of service.
“I thought it would be an ideal time to get a bite to eat” at the buffet inside the lounge, Putney explained.
The ovation continued for a full minute as Putney walked to his seat and waved his acknowledgement.
