»  Comments | Post a Comment

The nation's top environmental official and several governors from the Chesapeake Bay watershed are gathering to size up progress in the restoration of the bay.

The Chesapeake Executive Council is convening for its annual meeting today in Richmond. Among the scheduled speakers are Environmental Protection Agency chief Lisa Jackson, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and his counterpart from Maryland, Martin O'Malley. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett and District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray are also expected.

The bay's Executive Council establishes the policy agenda for the Chesapeake Bay Program. The bay is the focus of a massive restoration effort led by the EPA and involving all six states in its 64,000-square-mile watershed.

The other states include New York, Delaware and West Virginia.
