LOUISA — Tom Garrett, a Republican candidate for state Senate in the new 22nd District that includes northern Lynchburg, said Tuesday that Virginia needs an Arizona-style immigration law.
“Until the federal government honestly addresses the illegal immigration problem, the states have a duty to safeguard the taxpayer’s dollars,” said Garrett, who is commonwealth’s attorney of Louisa County.
“Virginia can and should lead in helping the federal government do its job by passing common-sense legislation that allows our state and local law enforcement communities to assist federal authorities,” Garrett said.
Four other candidates are opposing Garrett in an Aug. 23 Republican primary in the 22nd District, which was created by the General Assembly in last spring’s redistricting process.
The other candidates are Mark Peake of Lynchburg, Claudia Tucker of Amherst County, Brian Bates of Buckingham County and Bryan Rhode of Goochland County.
