Rhode leads fund-raising efforts in state senate's new 22nd district

Two state Senate candidates from Goochland and Louisa counties are poised to mail the most brochures to Lynchburg-area voters in the Republican primary in August

Bryan Rhode of Goochland County claimed the new 22nd Senate district’s No. 1 spot in fund-raising reports that candidates filed Friday with the State Board of Elections.

The reports covered the April-through-June period.

Tom Garrett of Louisa County was in a financially strong No. 2 position.

Rhode and Garrett led the five candidates who will be on the Aug. 23 ballot to choose a Republican nominee in the 22nd Senate District, which includes northern Lynchburg, Amherst County and Appomattox County.

Rhode said he’d raised $125,000 and had almost $109,000 in the all-important, cash-on-hand column.

Garrett reported that he’d raised $80,000 and had $68,000 on hand as of June 30.

Rhode’s totals included $50,000 in loans to his campaign.

Garrett showed a zero in the loans column.

Three other candidates in the primary also filed their reports Friday.

Brian Bates of Buckingham County said he’d raised $55,000 and had almost $45,000 on hand.

Mark Peake of Lynchburg said he’d raised $49,000 and had a $32,000 balance.

Claudia Tucker of Amherst County said she’d raised $12,000 and had almost $9,000 in the bank.

The primary’s winner will face Democrat Bert Dodson of Lynchburg in the November general election.

Dodson reported his campaign raised $103,000 in its first three weeks ended June 30.  His total included $35,000 in loans, and $72,500 cash on hand.

The 22nd Senate District includes the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Cumberland, Fluvanna, Goochland, Prince Edward, the northern half of Lynchburg, and part of Louisa County.

Rhode, an assistant prosecutor in the Richmond commonwealth’s attorney’s office, said he was “humbled by the outpouring of support I’ve enjoyed from the many donors who have invested their money, and the many volunteers who have invested their time into my campaign.”

Garrett, who is commonwealth’s attorney of Louisa County, said he received an additional $33,000 from Del. Bill Janis, R-Henrico County, on Friday. The gift pushed Garrett’s campaign to the $120,000 mark, Garrett said in a news release.

“We are 40 days out (until the primary vote) and I am humbled by the number of people and the degree of support we have received from across the district,” Garrett said.

In terms of pure cash contributions, Garrett reported $76,500, topping Rhode by almost $12,000.

Rhode said his cash contributions came from 250 individuals.

Garrett said 150 individuals contributed cash to his campaign.
