Campbell County Republican leaders have called off a mass meeting that was scheduled for Aug. 6.
The action erased any doubt about the group’s support for Del. Kathy Byron, R-Campbell County, who will be on the ballot for re-election Nov. 8.
Rick Boyer, chairman of the county’s Republican unit, had called the mass meeting to nominate the party’s candidate for the House of Delegates in the 22nd District.
Boyer’s call for the meeting appeared in a newspaper advertisement on June 27, five days after the State Board of Elections had certified Byron as the GOP candidate.
Boyer said at the time that he called the mass meeting to make a point about Byron’s request that she be nominated in a primary election.
No one filed to run against Byron in a primary, so her candidacy was certified by the SBE.
Boyer said Tuesday that Byron “is the candidate by default.”
“Kathy is home free,” Boyer said, adding that “frankly, we are tickled that she is our candidate again.”
“And if anybody is fool enough to run against her in November, we will make sure she goes back to Richmond,” Boyer said.
